Oh, no, we just assume everyone there is already a Christian!
Dialogue paraphrased from Nicolae by Jerry Jenkins and Tim LaHaye
When working with “Christian” vermin, just make them a baptized version of the world. If the church is simply the world, only a little better, that’s fine. Swearing a little less and giving a little more. It’s no threat to us. God calls them to be radically different. We substitute that with little differences… it’s one of our biggest advantages, making the human vermin falsely assume they’re Christians because they go to church.
If they have to become real Christians then its cafeteria Christians we want. God wants all of them. Instead train them to be church shoppers. Get as many offerings as possible on the spiritual smorgasbord. Make it a consumer religion where each customer gets to meet his own needs. Just desert? Fine! No vegetables, that’s ok too! Just make it about them and not Him.
The best part is that these humans are dying! We don’t need them to believe in any one thing so long as they don’t believe the One True Thing! Time is on our side! Distract them with other religions, relativism or even just a fake Christianity for a few decades and before you know it, their few decades have run out! Then they are ours forever in hell!
So why attack God in their lives when you can so easily get them to replace Him, at least temporarily. Get them obsessed over houses, money, cars, mortgages, sports, anything that turns their attention toward what has no eternal value. Their life clock winds down each day!
And if they absolutely have to go to church, get them to sing feel good campfire songs. Give them a sense of camaraderie but don’t draw them toward God. It’s great to watch them when they sing like this. Half look bored and half look they have to go to the bathroom but can’t for at least an hour! Whatever experiences they have at church make little difference to us except one, If they end up finding God, meeting Him personally through His Son, giving praise and adoration to Him, then it’s time for us to tremble. When they truly encounter Him they are changed and we are defeated!
Foulgrin speaking to Ishbane (both demons) in Randy Alcorn’s The Ishbane Conspiracy. Dialogue excerpted from various pages. See note at end.
Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’
Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’
Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount – Matthew 7:21-23
One of the favorite quotes of pastors and movie writers alike is the old “The devil’s greatest trick was to make the world think he doesn’t exist.” That may very well be true in regard to the world. Speaking in terms of the church it would be more correct to say “The devil’s greatest trick is in getting people to think they are Christians.”
We could cite statistic after statistic to show that week over week attendees in just about every church in America and in every denomination are not really Christians by either a sizeable chunk or sadly even a majority – depending on which numbers you choose to believe. What’s really surposing is not those numbers but how can we expect anything less when so many churches are not preaching true Christianity! Many don’t even preach out of the Bible! Rather they offer, each Sunday, a self help Gospel with God as a benevolent old Craftsman and Christ as His self sacrificing Son who exists to serve us. For shame! Here’s the statistic that offers the least comfort, coming from the Southern Baptists, that 2 out of 3 self proclaiming Christians, do not profess to have a personal relationship with Jesus. Egad!
The devil must just love that. 2 out of 3 “Christians”… aren’t Christians.
The Bible makes it very clear that things like prayer, tithing, Bible reading and even church attendance, which in and of themselves are great things, do not make someone a Christian. A Christian is only someone who has made a confession of faith in Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior. Not mental assessment that Jesus is Lord and Savior (the Bible says even the demon’s believe that). Not going to church. Keith Green said “Going to church doesn’t make you a Christian anymore then standing in a McDonald’s makes you a cheeseburger”.
The reason so many of our churches are so anemic is that they are significantly populated by non-Christians who fool themselves into thinking they are Christians. That’s not opinion, that’s verifiable fact.
But, Good News! There is a remedy, and it’s… the Good News! The Good News that Jesus came to save sinners; that if we will confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in our heart God raised Him from the dead, we will be saved. (Romans 10:9)
None of this is meant to make anyone doubt their salvation but one of the admonishments of Scripture is to:
Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you--unless, of course, you fail the test?
2 Corinthians 13:5 NIV84
The devil’s greatest trick is not to make people think he’s imaginary but to get people to think they are Christians. So far the statistics suggest he’s doing a bang up job.
Don’t be fooled. Be Christ’s.

‘til next time… God bless!
In the selection from The Ishbane Conspiracy I took the liberty of tying together statements that appear on several pages of the text for the purpose of creating a single whole illustration including the addition of a few transitions to create said effect and make the point contained above. I trust our good friend Randy Alcorn will forgive that liberty and appreciate the purposes for which it was done. Any success is Randy’s and any failure of the illustration is mine. I heartily recommend that all mature and well grounded Christians consider reading The Ishbane Conspiracy and it’s counterpart Lord Foulgrin’s Letters. It will terrify you realize what is really at stake in each day of our lives. – Grant

If you’re inbox is anything like mine, you’re being flooded with emails about who to vote for in this upcoming election. While Tapestry tries to stay apolitical, part of our mission is to weigh in on crucial questions of the Christian life. This election sets up a very interesting question. Do you vote for someone who claims to be a Christian but is clearly against foundational tenets of Christianity and God’s Word or do you vote for someone who really seems committed to a “Christian” way of life, despite the fact that he’s a non-Christian. Great choice, huh?
Several large Christian organizations have been sending around emails and even long articles saying how Christians need to vote and rationalizing how a Christian can vote for a non-Christian that holds to Christian principles. Quite frankly, that we have to make such a choice for the highest office in the land is proof that we as Christians have utterly failed here in America.
Now that’s a strong statement, so let me lay out the case before you disregard that statement:
First, here in America, the latest polls show that between 75-83% of Americans claim to be “Christian”. So you’re telling me that the best candidates that 80% of America could find are, essentially, two non-Christians? That’s the best we could do? Are there no good, strong, Christian Leaders here in America? Could 80% of America not have forced the selection of a candidate that was at least a clear Christian? Or are we simply so apathetically disengaged that we couldn’t bother to get off the pew and actually do something about the state of this country? No punches pulled today, we’re past that.
Second, are you aware that 21 million Evangelical Christians stayed home in the 2008 election? We need not be in the position we are today if American Christians had done their job 4 years ago. Granted, that wasn’t a very attractive match up either but we, at least, had a duty to vote against those who wanted to fundamentally pervert America away from its Christian heritage and morals.
Third, let me be completely blunt. As Christians, there is no way to rationalize your commitment to Christ with your support of Abortion, Homosexuality, Religious Pluralism (equality of religions), Abandonment of Israel and Rejection of God. Those things are actual planks of certain political parties here in America. The Bible makes very clear that we are to have no association with the things of evil, let alone actively support and endorse it.
Here in America, we have what is called a Representative form of Government, which means that the elected officials are supposed to represent the people, both physically and in terms of ideals. Vote for a pro-abortion candidate and you are endorsing their child-killing stance. No way around it. In 2008 Barna Research showed that the “Christian” vote was split nearly 50/50 between the two presidential candidates. Really? So, I reiterate, as a Christian, you can not maintain the integrity of your Christian walk and actively support those things that oppose it. (Matthew 6:22-24; Galatians 6:7-8)
Here’s the unvarnished truth; while I fully support the government outlined in the Constitution, the fact that we have a strong centralized federal government is proof that we have failed to continue the founding ideals of this country. Our Founding Father’s envisioned a group of people who formed together to create states with the ideal that these states would loosely band together as “These United States” for the purposes of mutual defense, commerce, etc. We have perverted that into a massive centralized government that rules the very warp and woof of daily life. In reality, as Christians, we are to be dependent on God alone for things like protection, provision and security. The Bible makes several things clear on this front:
The truth is that we do not need a Social Security, Children’s Protective Service or even a court system. We, as the Church, trusting in God, were supposed to provide those things or trust in God to provide them. While it may seem like He takes longer then we would like to address some things, He is in control.
As “One nation under God” we have resoundingly failed to be one nation under God and have given those who stand opposed to Christian ideals ample room and reason to enact policies counter to God’s design.
The Bible makes it very clear that God designed His Children (originally and always the Israelites and today Christians and The Church by way of adoption through Christ) to be solely dependent on Him. When the Israelites asked Samuel for a king, God’s response was to tell Samuel that the reality was that they were rejecting God as King, instead substituting a human leader. We, here in America, the one nation in the world founded on God, have rejected Him and asked man to rule our lives. How dare we!
Is it any wonder this country is running itself into the ground faster then any nation in history when we have committed the same sin that destroyed Israel, namely turning our back on God?
So, what’s the answer? Stay Home? Hide in a hole? Move? None of the Above.
Pray. Repentance comes first. Then prayer. Pray for this nation. Pray for a turning of hearts and minds. Pray that small minority here in America that so actively hates God and has been so successful in perverting America is silenced and then converted. Ask God to change the very shape of this election, into one where there is a clear choice, pleasing to Him. God can do anything.
Change. Change our priorities to reflect what is real, not temporal. Christianity is not about Sunday Morning. It’s not about how much money you give. We are to be Christians first; everything else is subordinate to that. Our walk with Christ determines our family, job, leisure time, priorities, actions, thoughts and engagements. Not the other way around.Hope. Hope that it’s not too late and that we as a nation still have time to change. That’s about the only part of the political slogans I agree with. Hope that we can Change back into a nation that serves God. The alternative is clearly described in Scripture, God’s wrath and judgment, which in my humble opinion is long overdue.
This election is a choice. But it’s not a choice between candidates. It is a choice between Heaven and Hell, Good and Evil, America and her destruction and I mean that without any metaphor.
The only question is if we’ll stay sitting on our pews yet again while the country desperately needs us.
