SYNOPSIS:

"But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8

For nailing Christ to the cross, we deserve death. After all, our sin put Him there. Pure and simple, we deserve punishment for our sins. But instead of justice, we have been given mercy and forgiveness from God through Christ if only we will embrace Him as our Savior. Scripture is clear that what DiCianni has shown in the painting is true – every one of us will be called upon someday to account for our actions and decisions. The question will simply be whether Jesus is standing beside us.

ARTIST NOTE:

This scene takes place in a courtroom. We will all end up there even if we are as “innocent” as a young child. The verdict of “guilty” will always be handed down (Romans 3:23). For the believer though, that verdict will be superseded by an eternal decree. We are “forgiven” because of Calvary. Christ Himself paid the price symbolized here by the hammer, nails and crown of thorns. The nails overlap to form the shape of the cross where our forgiveness was nailed down never to be forgotten. After all, He wrote it with His own blood.
