Throughout Scripture we are continually amazed at Christ’s actions. Here in the story illustrated by Mercy, an adulteress is caught and given a death sentence. She deserved it. The people screamed for it and the law warranted it. It seemed to be a case of well-deserved justice. However, the Author of all Justice, Jesus, kneels before her and writes on the ground. Max Lucado, the famous author and pastor, once said that what Jesus wrote on the ground that day was “Forgiven.” Where justice demanded payment, Jesus paid the bill in blood and covered over our sins through His mercy.
I put no background to speak of in this painting. Its central theme is the focus. Her eyes are looking up with a hesitant look wondering if Jesus’ opinion will be any different than the others. Her ruffled hair and disheveled garments give some clues as to her lifestyle and the fact that she was fresh from the “scene of the crime.” The shadow of the Savior falls gently on her. There is nothing to fear. He speaks what every one of us longs to hear. “Get up and try it again. You get a second chance” (That’s my loose interpretation). She has been spared the stoning she deserved. The rocks were dropped close enough for her to see that they have fallen in the shape of a cross. She could be exempted from understanding what that symbolized that day. But soon the whole world would never have an excuse for being ignorant. She just got the benefit early. I hope she didn’t take it for granted.
